Izaac and Meg were recommended Woodleigh Station more than once, so at the beginning of August, they decided it was time to hit the road and head up to Far North Queensland to see what all the fuss was about.

They arrived at the campsite not really knowing what to expect but were completely blown away by the charm of this camping spot. Around each corner, they were met with little surprises. A small waterfall tucked away near one of the off-grid sites, station animals wandering through camp and an old three-storey dredge were just a few of the many things that made this spot so special.

They stayed at Camp 3 in the Tailing Yard area, a grassy and private site located around 26 km west of Ravenshoe. The few days they spent there were total bliss, with campfires under endless starry skies and foggy mornings leaving them feeling like they should have stayed a few extra days.

Best Time to Visit

Izaac and Meg visited in August, and while the days made for great exploring, the mornings and evenings were pretty cold.

The river was freezing too, so if you are heading there at a similar time of year, pack a few extra layers for around camp and something warm for the bed!

September to October could be a better time to visit, with temperatures being a little more comfortable. 

Trip Highlights

Woodleigh Station was a unique spot and hard to forget. Their main highlight was sitting around the fire with mates under a sky full of stars. The waterfall and discovering another special camping spot, Nettle Creek campsite, was also a standout moment.

What to Pack

There are a few things Izaac and Meg would definitely recommend bringing along.

Their picks:

• A fishing rod for spending some time down by the river

• A camera, because there is plenty of scenery worth stopping for

• A muk mat for the grassy campsite, especially when the morning dew sets in

• Extra rugs or blankets for the bed, particularly if you are visiting during the colder months

• A warm jacket for sitting around the fire once the temperature drops

Woodleigh Station is kid-friendly, which makes it an great option for families looking to make a memorable trip with the little ones.

Dogs are also welcome on request, so make sure you check with the station before you book.

Final Thoughts

For Izaac and Meg, Woodleigh Station is a must-do trip and definitely worth the visit.

From foggy mornings to station animals and a waterfall, there were plenty of things to explore without it ever feeling too busy.

Their main regret was simply not staying longer.

If they headed back, Nettle Creek campsite would be at the top of the list, along with a few more nights and a bit more time spent fishing.
