Esperance: White Sand, Turquoise Waters & The Ultimate Beach Escape

Some places don’t just meet expectations—they exceed them. Esperance, on the South Coast of Western Australia, is one of those places. With powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and rugged coastal cliffs, this hidden gem is a dream destination for beach lovers.
For Kelly & Camille from The Van Life Got Us, Esperance had been a bucket-list destination for years. After seeing countless breathtaking photos online, they finally made the journey—and it was everything they imagined and more.
Why Esperance?
For anyone who loves the ocean, sunshine, and wide-open beaches, Esperance is paradise. Unlike many other iconic Australian beach spots, the beaches here are often uncrowded and peaceful, even during peak season.
Kelly & Camille stayed at RAC Esperance Holiday Park, which offered a perfect base for exploring the coastline while being close to town.
Their biggest takeaway? The beaches are even more stunning in person.
“That first magical moment when we saw Esperance’s beaches… the soft white sand, the crystal-clear water, and the serenity of it all—it was a true ‘pinch me’ moment.”
Best Time to Visit Esperance
Esperance is beautiful year-round, but Kelly & Camille visited in February, during summer, to make the most of the warm weather and swimmable waters.
Pros of visiting in summer:
Warmer temperatures for swimming and beach days.
Longer daylight hours to explore more.
Fewer chilly mornings and nights.
One challenge? The wind.
Western Australia’s coastline can be unpredictably windy, which can make beach days tricky. But with enough time, you’re almost guaranteed to experience some dreamy, calm days.
Top Things to Do in Esperance
Esperance is more than just beaches (though they are the main attraction). Here are Kelly & Camille’s must-do experiences:
Beach Hopping
The beaches here are some of the most spectacular in Australia. Their favourites included:
-
Twilight Beach – Great for swimming, with huge rock formations.
-
Blue Haven Beach – Crystal-clear water with scenic coastal views.
-
Lucky Bay – Famous for its kangaroos on the beach!
-
Wharton Beach – A dog-friendly spot with some of the clearest water you’ll ever see.
The Great Ocean Drive
One of the best ways to explore Esperance’s coastline is by taking a scenic drive along The Great Ocean Drive. This coastal route offers breathtaking views, secluded beaches, and dramatic cliffs—all at your own pace.
Hike Frenchman’s Peak
Located in Cape Le Grand National Park, this hike is challenging but rewarding. At the summit, you’re greeted with panoramic views of the coastline and rugged landscape.
Tips for Visiting Esperance
Stay Longer – The weather can be unpredictable, so having extra time increases your chances of those picture-perfect beach days.
Visit in Warmer Months – February is ideal for warm waters and long beach days. The cooler months can be too chilly for swimming.
Pet-Friendly Beaches – While national park beaches don’t allow dogs, Twilight Beach & Wharton Beach do!

Kid & Pet-Friendly?
