Hahn River Free Camp: Riverside Gem on the Gibb

Hahn River Free Camp: Riverside Gem on the Gibb
When you think of the Gibb River Road, rugged tracks and epic landscapes come to mind. But tucked away on this remote adventure route is a slice of riverside paradise that Sam and Wim from @bushandbay couldn’t resist extending their stay at. The Hahn River Free Camp turned out to be three nights of pure camping bliss.
Why This Spot?
This hidden gem was never on their original itinerary. It was a tip from fellow travellers that led them here, and it didn’t disappoint. The moment they arrived, they knew they’d stumbled upon something special with shady trees, a gentle creek to float in, and a peaceful, wind-free setting made it irresistible.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (June–August) is the peak season for travelling the Gibb River Road. Sam and Wim went in August and found the conditions perfect for camping with warm days for swimming and cool nights around the fire.
Trip Highlights
For Sam and Wim, the highlights were all about simple pleasures:
-
Cooling off in the shallow creek and even floating along on a lilo.
-
Hammocks strung up under shady trees for lazy afternoons.
-
The joy of sitting around a campfire under the Kimberley night sky.
-
That feeling of freedom that only comes with a great free camp.
Challenges & Surprises
As with many free camps, facilities are non-existent. There are no toilets or designated sites, and it’s strictly first come, best dressed. A 4WD is essential to get here, and there are only a handful of prime spots right by the river. Flies were also keen visitors at sunset so pack the bug spray!
What surprised them most was just how much they loved the spot. They only stopped in for a look, but ended up staying three nights.
Tips for Future Travellers
-
Arrive early (between 8–10am) to secure a riverside campsite.
-
Bring everything you need including food, water, firewood, and fuel. Derby is the nearest town, and it’s 360km away.
-
A floatie, camping chair, and hammock will make this camp even more enjoyable.
What to Pack
This camp is all about being self-sufficient and making the most of the natural setting. Sam and Wim recommend:
-
muk mat – for keeping sand and dirt out of your setup.
-
Bug spray – flies are relentless at times.
-
Cooking gear and firewood – campfires are allowed.
-
A hammock and floatie – perfect for that shallow river.
Kid & Pet Friendly?
Yes, the Hahn River Free Camp is suitable for both kids and pets. Families can cool off in the shallow waters, and dogs are welcome to join in the adventure.
Final Thoughts
The Gibb River Road is known for its ruggedness, but Hahn River Free Camp proves it has soft edges too. With its tranquil riverside setting, shady trees, and campfire-friendly vibe, it’s no wonder Sam and Wim decided to linger longer.
