Pelican Bay: A Beachfront Camp the Kids Will Never Forget
Some camping spots just stick with you. Pelican Bay at Inskip Point is one of those places, the kind that feels familiar the moment you pull up, even if it’s been years between visits.
For Darci and Brenden from @rippinaroundoz, this trip was a return to a childhood favourite. A place they grew up camping at, now shared with their own kids. Set right on the beachfront near Rainbow Beach, Pelican Bay is relaxed, simple and all about slowing down.
Why This Spot?
Located at Pelican Bay Campground, this campsite is a favourite for families who love the water. It’s protected and generally calm, making it ideal for beach launching a tinny, fishing, or just letting the kids roam between the sand and the van.
With the beach right outside the caravan door, there’s no packing up for day trips because beach days are simply part of everyday camp life here.
Best Time to Visit
Pelican Bay can be visited year-round, but summer brings warm water and long beach days. That said, still conditions can mean midges, especially with nearby mangroves. A breezier window or shoulder seasons can offer a more comfortable stay — particularly if you’re planning time out on the boat.
Trip Highlights

The magic of Pelican Bay is in the simple moments:
- Beach fires right out the front of the van
- Taking the kids out on the boat together
- Long afternoons on the water followed by relaxed evenings
- Driving along the beach and watching the sun drop behind the Rainbow Beach dunes
Once you’re set up, it feels surprisingly peaceful; a true switch-off kind of camp.
Things to Know Before You Go
This is a basic campground. There are no amenities, bins or water, so you’ll need to be fully self-sufficient. Some areas can be a little overgrown when manoeuvring a van, so take your time getting in and out.
Midgies were the biggest challenge once the wind dropped, so insect protection is essential.
What to Pack
- muk mat - a must for keeping sand out of the van
- Insect repellent (and then some more)
- Shade or a pop-up shelter for the kids
- Portable beach chairs
- Plenty of water, food and snacks
- Firewood and marshmallows for beach fires
Kid & Pet Friendly?
Yes to both. Having the beach right outside camp makes it especially easy for families, and pets are welcome too.
Nearby Supplies
The nearest town is Rainbow Beach, about a 15–20 minute drive away. It’s the place to stock up on food, fuel or grab takeaway if needed.
Final Thoughts

Returning to a place that’s been loved since childhood made this trip especially meaningful for Darci and Brenden. Beach days with the kids, sunset drives by the dunes, and that laid-back Pelican Bay vibe created the kind of memories that last well beyond the trip itself.
