The WA Water That Rivals the Whitsundays
The WA Water That Rivals the Whitsundays
When people talk about crystal-clear water in Australia, most conversations head straight to Queensland. But tucked just north of Jurien Bay, Sandy Cape quietly makes its own case.
Cam, Michaela and Oakley from Locked and Lifted 4x4 had heard it was a “must visit”. They rolled in expecting a nice beach camp. What they found was water so clear it stopped them in their tracks.
And yes — it genuinely rivals the Whitsundays.
But before you hitch up and head north, here’s what you need to know.
Location & Access
Sandy Cape Recreation Park sits around 15 minutes from Jurien Bay and roughly two hours south of Geraldton in Western Australia. The main campground offers 112 unpowered coastal bushland sites, all accessible by two-wheel drive.
Beyond the main area, additional sites stretch north and south along the coastline. These are only accessible by high-clearance 4x4 vehicles and require fully self-contained setups with onboard toilet facilities. If you’re travelling in a bigger rig, access isn’t the issue — positioning is. Certain sites, like 103 and 93, are elevated and give you the best chance of ocean views, but they book quickly.
Cam and Michaela stayed at Site 93, which still offers elevated views and easy beach access. In a higher setup like theirs, the outlook is great. In a lower van, you may only get partial water views.
This place books out fast especially on weekends. If you’re even considering it, secure your site early.
Conditions to Plan For

This isn’t a “rock up and wing it” type of destination. You do need to be prepared.
Wind: It picks up around midday. Lock down awnings, secure loose gear and expect afternoon gusts.
Bees: A few around, though not aggressive during their stay.
Soft sand: Beach driving is possible, but conditions are soft so adjust tyre pressures accordingly.
This is where having the right setup matters. "It’s sandy and dusty underfoot, so a muk mat outside the van makes a noticeable difference especially when you’re in and out all day."
What To Do While You’re There

“The clear water really stood out to us! You get clear water over on the east side of Aus but the water here is something else!”
For Cam and Michaela, that clarity shaped how they spent their days. Most mornings started in the water and most afternoons ended there too. Swimming, fishing and making the most of being right on the coastline became the rhythm of the trip.
Don’t skip the walk over the headland while you’re there. The view from the top gives you a full perspective of the coastline and how the campground sits within it.
Other favourites from their stay:
• Squid fishing
• Swimming from morning through late afternoon
• Setting up beach chairs in the dunes to watch the sunset
It’s a simple formula — clear water, easy access and time outside — but it’s exactly what makes Sandy Cape so popular.
What To Bring

• muk mat (sand builds quickly here)
• Fishing rods for squid
• Beach chairs
• Full water tanks. Make sure you fill up before you arrive
It’s a basic camp, so preparation makes the difference between relaxing and scrambling.
Kid & Pet Friendly?
Yes to both.
Open space, calm shallows and room to move make it ideal for families. Dogs are welcome, which makes it even better for travellers doing extended laps.
Final Thoughts
Sandy Cape isn’t complicated, but it rewards preparation. Book early, choose your site carefully and secure your setup before the wind rolls in. If you’re chasing genuinely clear water and a coastal camp that delivers exactly what it promises, this one earns its reputation.
