Smalleys Beach: Secluded Beach Camping in Cape Hillsborough

When you imagine the perfect family camping trip, what comes to mind? Long beach days, crackling campfires, kids running barefoot through the bush, and the sound of the ocean just a few steps away? If so, Smalleys Beach Campground in Cape Hillsborough National Park is your kind of place.

Justin, Carissa, Char, and Mac from Laid Back Adventures recently spent a few nights at this hidden gem, just 50km from Mackay, and it had all the ingredients for a classic beachside escape.

Why Smalleys Beach?

For this crew, Smalleys Beach is a local favourite. It’s close enough to Mackay for a last-minute trip, but remote enough to feel like pure, off-grid freedom.

The campsites are tucked into the bush, offering plenty of shade and privacy, with ocean views just steps away. This means you can wake up to the sound of waves, fish straight from the beach, and spend your evenings cooking over the fire.

Why They Love It:

  • Fishing at high tide

  • Beach cricket and campfires

  • Stunning coastal walks and hikes

  • Epic sunrises at nearby Cape Hillsborough

Best Time to Visit

The family visited in Autumn (April), when the days are warm, the crowds are smaller, and the humidity is manageable. This makes it the perfect time for campfire dinners and long beach walks.

Wildlife Encounters

Staying in a National Park means you’re in the heart of wildlife territory. During their stay, the family spotted goannas, a python, and some very curious possums. Just a heads-up: don’t leave any food or rubbish out - even water bottles attracted curious critters overnight!

Is it Kid & Pet-Friendly?

Kids will love it! There’s plenty of space to roam, beach games to play, and fires to cook marshmallows over.
Pets, not so much. Like most National Parks, Cape Hillsborough doesn’t allow dogs.

Final Thoughts

For Justin, Carissa, Char, and Mac, this trip was the kind of back to basics camping that makes you fall in love with the great outdoors all over again. From morning beach walks to evening campfires under the stars, Smalleys Beach captures the essence of family camping memories.

“A must-do in Central/North QLD!”
